Review by Deane Juhan: Pat Henry’s DVD, “Organic Stretching,” is much more than just another how-to offering of poses and procedures. It is a dynamically exploratory invitation to sculpt your own yoga and to develop the strength and flexibility that are unique to you. Well thought-out and innovative examples of stretching movements are, of course, presented (with aesthetic beauty, I would add), rich ideas for getting started in the evolving of your own personal practice. But more importantly than that, Pat’s purpose is to lead you beyond the imitation of asanas and protocols, into an organic unfolding of your own body’s needs and capacities and your own individualized path to vitality. Very like Trungpa’s groundbreaking Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism in spirit and intention, “Organic Stretching” cuts through imitative discipline and opens the door to the celebration of your own idiosyncratic being and its expression–like no other’s–in your own joy of movement and self-development.

Review by Third-Year OS Student: Following the Organic Stretching™ video is definitely an adventure for your body. Your mind might be stubborn and hesitating, but it won’t be able to stop your body’s exploratory tour. That was my experience.
I recommend watching the video once without doing anything…just absorb the harmony and aesthetics and begin to understand the basic principals.
At first, I was confused just following the workout, losing track once in a while. But the next day at the Organic Stretching class, my body surprised me with new creative movements.
It was a truly wonderful discovery. The body simply forgot about the old limitations and habits. That was exactly what I wanted and needed, to move beyond the unnecessary limits and bad habits which keep my body in pain.
This work is a very different approach from any other body work I have ever done. It is very gentle and, therefore, allows you to do it even when you are experiencing painful conditions. The results might surprise you after one only try…I highly recommend using this video to find your path to joyous movement!

Organic Stretching™ is the natural stretching system for connective tissue, healthy joints, and increased range of motion. It is an individual stretching exercise developed from the principles underlying a pain management client therapy. OS is also useful as a warm-up for sports and dance, preparing the joints for action.
This system is improvisational…no two sessions are same. By moving slowly with attention and following the prescribed principles, your body leads you in movements with the potential to release restrictions and limitations acquired over a lifetime of use and misuse.
In Organic Stretching™: Principles and Movements Pat Henry leads you through demonstrations of each principle and each movement that underlies the program with commentary on how to approach the work. In three improvised sessions, Henry invites you to follow her as she follows the guiding voice of her body and describes for you the movements that she is making. With regular practice you may find the new freedom of movement, increased range of motion, and reduction of pain other students of Organic Stretching™ are enjoying.
Comments from students:
• My body thanks you.
• …heals and restores in a way that no other exercise can.
• It’s unlike anything I’ve seen or experienced before. My body feels energized and comfortable like it felt 30 years ago.
• I used to do Pilates and tai chi but now think that this connective tissue stuff is far better
• …a great tool for preventing future problems and limited mobility…something important as we age.
Pat Henry met Heather Wallace in 2006…first as a client on Wallace’s table, then a student and finally a WM practitioner. As Wallace’s therapy had done for more than a few thousand others, for Pat it had unlocked blocks from old injuries, including knee problems from her childhood. It was a natural progression from seeing clients on the table to wanting to give them the tools to be part of their own healing. She began teaching in 2008.
Author and artist Pat Henry left California in 1988 to become the first American woman to sail alone around the world via the canals. Today at 70, she is a model of inspiration for staying young in body, mind and spirit.

Yo Pat! Glad to see you doing more creative things. I’m sure you are still tangoing with the best, and painting with the best.
Our ‘gal’ Donna just left Rhode Island to sail back to Florida with beau Bob Philburn. She is never idle. I shot a photo before they left and will pull it from the camera later.
You made an impression here. Thanks for staying in touch. I’m still playing racquetball at 86 — just wish I could find my car in the lot faster.
Anyway, hang in Lady, you’re one in a million.
Will Barbeau
Hello, Will, Nice to hear from you. Yes, still some tango…more soon when the snowbirds return from up North. Painting has taken a back seat while the garden rules my time. We do all our serious planting Nov 1!
Thank you for the update on Donna…always amazing. I’ll look forward to seeing the photo.
You are a wonder and an inspiration…not really 86! Don’t worry till you can’t remember where you hit the racquetball!
Thank you for writing and a big hug for you, Pat
