The view out my kitchen window for six weeks in the apartment of friends. From below came the cow bell of the garbage man, the ding of the water man, the clang of the gas man, drum and bugle practice at the school next door, the knife sharpener's whistle, the braying of donkeys climbing the hill, and the gurgle of my espresso maker--morning noises at Alta Vista.
